In Kundalini Yoga we often do 40 day practices, mantras or kriyas. This is something I had alot of resistance to, but when you realize that challenges in a practice are what elevate you – The subject made more sense to me.
Why do we do a 40 practice in Kundalini Yoga ? Because your habits define you. What would you like to define who you are? I would like to know that when I decide to do something . . . I do it. I would like to absolutley say that I know I am capable, humble, committed and reliable. I would like to say that I have a lot to learn but that I am willing to do the work in THIS lifetime.
“Therefore when we do sadhana, what do we do? We challenge the weakness, the laziness and our self-destruction. We challenge everything which is going to destroy us tomorrow.”
–Yogi Bhajan, 1/21/88
In Kundalini yoga we often practice a particular kriya or mantra every single day for the same amount of time. Based on the number of days you do this, here is how it will affect your habits according to Yogi Bhajan.
40 Days: Practice every day for 40 days straight. This will break any negative habits that block you from the expansion possible through the kriya or mantra.
90 Days: Practice every day for 90 days straight. This will establish a new habit in your conscious and subconscious minds based on the effect of the kriya or mantra. It will change you in a very deep way.
120 Days: Practice every day for 120 days straight. This will confirm the new habit of consciousness created by the kriya or mantra. The positive benefits of the kriya get integrated permanently into your psyche.
1000 Days: Practice every day for 1000 days straight. This will allow you to master the new habit of consciousness that the kriya or mantra has promised. No matter what the challenge, you can call on this new habit to serve you.
A habit is a subconscious chain reaction between the mind, the glandular system and the nervous system. We develop habits at a very young age, I’m noticing this in my 4 and 6 year olds. Some of them serve our highest destiny. Some of them do not. By doing a 40, 90, 120 or 1000 day special sadhana, you can rewire that chain reaction. You can develop new, deeply ingrained habits that serve your highest good. We often do certain Kriyas or Meditation but you dont need to limit what kind of habit breaking or building you do. You can have 40 days of a clean yogic diet or 40 days of appreciation or 40 days reading the Jap Ji whatever you think you need to do.
Often times we start out with good intentions but not much follow through, If you find yourself having missed a day dont feel guilty, Just start from scratch and nail it next time! Many teachers recommend you start from the first day again, even if you broke the 40 day challenge at day 39. After much thought, I have to agree, I do believe you need to show yourself you can do it. Transformation and Awakening is very possible if commitment is in tact and doing 40 day practices can show you your potential. Don’t give up and have faith in the process of learning more about yourself and what you need. You CAN do it! You are divine! Reach inside yourslef and radiate your inner strength!
So.. Shall we begin? What habits would you like to promote? what habits would you like to demote?
