Mercury retrograde and some tools to keep you sane!

September 20, 2015

Crap! It’s mercury retrograde again! What is mercury retrograde? and what tools should we use to get through it? It started on September 17 and will go for 3 weeks until October 19.

What is Mercury retrograde? Three to four times a year, everyone’s  havoc-wreaking planet slows down in its orbit and appears to move backward. But Mercury Retrograde is really an optical illusion, since no planet actually moves backward. According to NASA, in normal motion, the stars and planets move in our night’s sky in a west-to-east direction. This is called “prograde” motion. Essentially a planet stops, and then turns retrograde when it catches up to, and then passes a slower moving planet. Retrograde of any planet  happens periodically, when the motion is temporarily switched to an east-to-west direction, before turning back to regular prograde motion.

Mercury is the planet of the mind, intelligence, communication, and perception. It governs technology, travel, movement, reason, memory, mental activities, how we assimilate information, and rules the nervous system. When Mercury is retrograde it is like it goes into a sleep cycle, or into an Underworld, and all of these Mercury aspects will be slowed, halted, and problematic. (All three Mercury retrograde periods this year have been in air signs). During this cycle we have the chance to work with these energies in a different way. Ask a fisherman about the influence of the moon on the tides, or a scientist about the moon’s influence on the water in our bodies. The earth has a magnetic field, and so do we. And these you can ask a quantum physicist who can measure that magnetic field.

What can I do to manage this retrograde?

Plan ahead & prepare before mercury goes retrograde. Once you begin to pay attention to how events in your life change during these phases, you will soon see how important it is to take note of them. During these three weeks called Mercury retrograde, your mental faculties are not functioning well; in fact they “go on vacation.” Keeping track of Mercury retrograde periods can allow you to increase your productivity and avoid at least some of the frustration they can bring about. These last few days everything that I planned has been going wrong. As I started to remind myself to just let go of expectations, I realized it was mercury retrograde. I really need to mark these events in my calender as a sort of vacation. The good news is, once we are over the threshold and into the Underworld ( after we get adjusted to the retrograde), we can safely go about our business knowing we are in another realm. The same goes for when Mercury is stationing direct, just make sure you give your brain a few days to adjust back to solar thinking. The house in your natal chart that Mercury retrogrades in, will be your Underworld zone.

Slow down. You cant speed anyway, so just slow down. Let yourself be taken into other dimensions, try on different filters, experiment, shine a light on your demons, then recharge and reboot.

Eat grounding foods like root vegetables, berries, almonds and tree nuts. Its the perfect time to start eating winter squash, which is also grounding.

FInd comfort in your daily rituals, if you don’t have any, maybe now is a good time to create one. My morning routine grounds me. I wake up, make tea, make breakfast, homeschool work with the children, then I do yoga. My yoga routine also has a routine to it. I put my essential oils on, tune in with a mantra, do a warm up then a kriya followed by a meditation and tuning out mantra. I always have my water and journal with me during yoga as well.

Though it is not something we regularly take into consideration, the influence of planetary bodies on our bodies is real. Think of it this way: long before we open our mouths our magnetic fields have come into contact with the other person. If the magnetic field is subject to a special pull during these periods then the magnetic fields that are interacting are different. We’re different. Instruments of communication that rely on these magnetic fields are also subject to the changes in them from planetary influence.

the Eight Stroke Breath for Energy and Stress Release Kriya
Posture:  Sit calmly with a straight spine. Bring the hands in front of the Heart Center. The two palms face each other, about four inches apart, with the elbows pointing out to the sides. The forearms are parallel to the ground. The left hand is on top with the palm facing down. The right hand is directly underneath the left, with the palm facing up.
Eyes: Look at the tip of your nose and concentrate.
Breath: Inhale through the nose in 8 equal strokes; exhale through the nose in 8 equal strokes. Make the breath a continuous rhythm; do not pause between the inhale and the exhale cycles.
Mantra: Mentally vibrate SA TA NA MA, SA TA NA MA on the inhale and the exhale.
Time: 11 Minutes.
To Close: lnhale deeply and hold for 30 seconds. Exhale and relax.

Counting your breath will force you to relate to your breath. Doing this meditation for 11 minutes a day can be enough to drastically reduce, or even remove, stress from your daily life.

If you have any more tips you would like to share on how you keep sane during mercury retrograde, please share with us! Good news is, its the last one of the year!
